• The honeybee detects ultraviolet light patterns on flowers via the photoreceptors in their eyes, allowing them to distinguish between those with pollen/nectar and those without. • The Japanese Dace Fish is able to detect UV light, assisting in mate selection and detection of prey- hence helping survival as prey is able to be
Invasive species interact with the global health of ecosystems; cause great damage to natural systems and are a huge cost to society as a whole (1). Biologists and environmentalists are alarmed that the invasions of these species could lead to large-scale declines and extinction of native species (3). There are approximately 50,000 foreign species Living in the United States, causing major environmental damages which costs add up to about $120 billion a year. It is believed that about 42% of the threatened or endangered species are at risk because of invasive species (4).
For many it’s a first pet, a gift from family, something you won as a prize at a carnival, but for Canadian residents the familiar orange goldfish everyone knows and loves is becoming a serious problem. Some flush them in a hurry because they no longer want to take care of them, others commit them to a porcelain vortex because they believe their beloved fish has passed, and the Canadian Government is issuing a warning now to citizens of Canada to stop flushing their fish. Just a few goldfish with the potential to disrupt an entire ecosystem Goldfish are entering the ecosystem the way that a lot of invasive species end up in an environment they don’t belong, Humans are putting them there. Human interference is one of the leading causes of the beginning of over population of invading alien species. In this case many of the fish are going down drains, and ending up in Canada’s lakes and rivers.
Kira Bender Mrs. Dafoe APEL: Period 4 15 September 2014 Bradstreet Rhetorical Précis In her poem, “Upon the Burning of Our House (1666),” Anne Bradstreet, the first female writer in the British North American colonies to be published, employs the capitalization of specific words and a shift in point of view in order to inform us of a situation in which her devotion to God was challenged and yet consequentially strengthened. Bradstreet opens her poem with the burning down of her home and the amount of fear it caused her. She then gives thanks to God, since she believes all things are his and he has the right to take what he wants.
Lamprey Report During the 1950s lampreys became a problem. Lampreys were feeding on trout in the Great Lakes and by the late 1950s the population of the trout was very little. Fortunately, The Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC), pursuant to the Convention on Great Lakes Fisheries, delivers sea lamprey control in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The GLFC fixed this problem by, killing the larvae and eggs before the lampreys were born.
I think that SeaWorld is an amazing facility. I love the fact that they rescue sea creatures from their inevitable death. I love the fact that children love to come here. I love the fact that this place causes children to subconsciously learn something. I love to bring my kids here on the weekend to watch the shows that the trainers put on with the orcas.
I researched Marine Mammal Center. They rehabilitate estranged animals to get their health up and release them back into the water. Since 1975, they have rescued and treated over 18,000 mammals. (according to Marine Mammal Center, 2015) Seventeen sea lions were poisoned on April 27, 2015.
The creature uses ultraviolet in order to see. Ultraviolet or UV is from the sun, lamps, or any light source. UV light is a little bit higher than visible light. They have shorter wavelengths, higher frequencies, and higher energy. The creature needs ultraviolet vision so their vitamin D increases, which means that their bones will get stronger and healthier.
Green sea turtles are an endangered species with a drastically reduced population sizes of 3 to 4 feet. A typical green sea turtle grows to a maximum size of about 4 feet and weight about 440 pounds. They have a heart-shaped shell, small head, and single-clawed flippers. Sea turtles range can be olive-green, yellow, greenish-brown, reddish-brown, or black in color. As for the hatchlings, they generally have a black carapace, white plastron, and white margins on the shell and limbs.
Sea Sponges are animals that live in the ocean floor. They are the simplest animals and can produce asexually and sexually. They are favored over synthetic sponges because of their softness and their ability to stop mold, mildew, and bacteria. Sponges are harvested by divers who cut sponges off of their bases with hooks. AFter the divers cut the animal off of its base the sponge will grow back on the same base in a few years.
The Voyage The Seahorse, Lord Melville and Boadicea transports were shipwrecked on the south coast of Ireland; almost two hundred years ago, on January 30th 1816.There were probably at least 28 transports of troops on the seas, bound for Cork on that fateful night. The Lord Melville and the Seahorse sailed from Ramsgate together with the William Pitt while the transports Boadicea and Fox sailed from Dover. The Lord Melville was wrecked near the Old Head of Kinsale, County Cork, together with the Boadicea, while the Seahorse was wrecked about 80 miles up the coast in Tramore Bay, County Waterford. The Fox limped into Waterford Harbour on the following day. Ramsgate would have made a bustling scene as the troops
Response Paper Assignment The Little Seagull Handbook by Richard Bullock discusses the documentation, punctuation, grammar, and the steps in writing a paper. This book is a guide for many types of writing including MLA, APA, Chicago, and CSE. The material makes up three sections which are how to write, research, and edit your paper. This handbook includes many great resources for helping you find what you need to write a paper.
Gruber shows the improvement in technology, the benefits of this biofluorescent protein, and the multitude of species now found with this trait, simply from the discovery of a green glowing eel. In 1926 Dr. William Longely and Charles martin were using highly explosive magnesium powder to capture the essence of a fish, which now is replaced with a new set of electronical gear. This type of gear is not only safer to the scuba divers but projects a blue light to enhance the bio fluorescent proteins allowing the divers to capture the vibrant colors given off the reptiles, fish and plants below. From this being said, the sea creatures seemed to take in the blue light and reflect their bio fluorescent protein in return. Some of these newly found biofluorescent sea creatures include the Seahorse hippocampus erectus and green fluorescent swell shark.
When one thinks of a veterinarian, most associate this job title with treating dogs, cats, horses, cows, and other farm and companion animals. However, a relatively small field not known by the general population is that of marine veterinary medicine. If one has a passion for the water and a desire to help the creatures in it, marine veterinary medicine just may be the perfect career. Marine veterinarians are responsible for “conducting basic exams and evaluations, giving vaccinations, taking samples of blood and other bodily fluids, prescribing and distributing medication, evaluating behaviour, performing surgical procedures, and taking x-rays and sonograms” (Kramer “Life of an Aquatic Veterinarian”).
Marine organisms are animals, plants, and other living things that live in the ocean. A Marine biologist is a scientist who studies marine organisms and studies the bodies, behavior, and the history of marine organisms. They also study how marine organisms interact with each other and their environment. I have chosen to research about Marine biology because I would like to learn about sea life, the ocean, and its surrounding environment. To start off, a Marine biologist might study coral, crabs, fish, microscopic marine organisms, sea stars, seaweed, squid, or whales.
