In December 1791, the Second Amendment was adopted, along with nine other amendments. The Second amendment gave people the right to keep and bear arms. More precisely, the Second Amendment gave the right for people to bear arms themselves because a well regulated militia was necessary to the security of the free state when the military was not stable enough(Yuhas, 2017). This was adopted 226 years ago. At the time, the founding fathers of America knew that society could be safe when everyone had the right to possess guns. To begin with, it is very clear that the Second Amendment is very outdated and irrelevant in today’s society. According to Senior UN Advisor John Sachs, the main purpose of the Second Amendment is to prevent the new Federal Government, established in 1789, from disarming the state militias and replacing them with a new Federal standing army (Sachs, 2013) . This concern was relevant for perhaps a few years after the birth of America, but it is irrelevant today. Americans currently do not rely on state militias for freedom from the federal government. Those in militias, military forces grouped of civilians, state that the individual right to bear arms guarantees the American people against government tyranny. Their opposition to federal government is what distinguishes them from the militias of old, which, according to Mark Nuckols from The Atlantic, were designed to aid the government, rather than fight them, in the event of an emergency (Nuckols, 2013). This is an issue because, at a time when America has the most advanced military system and tactics, having multiple groups from within acting on their own without the agreement of the military could cause harm for more than just the militias themselves.
