The second skin is a documentary produced by Chris Bailey. The documentary explains that video games have both positive and negative effects on people’s lives. The second skin takes an intimate look at three sets of computer gamers whose lives have been transformed by the emerging genre of computer games called Massively Multiplayer Online games (MMOs). World of Warcraft, Second Life, and Ever quest are computer games that allow millions of users to simultaneously interact in virtual spaces. Second Skin introduces us to couples who have fallen in love without ever meeting, disabled players whose lives have been given new purpose, those struggling with addiction, Chinese gold-farming sweatshop workers, wealthy entrepreneurs and legendary guild leaders, all living within a world that doesn’t quite exist. The tone and the way the filmmaker connects with the audience are the greatest influences on establishing credibility. The filmmaker’s credibility is also established by interviewing real life gamers, game developers and also gaming professionals, people who have either experienced gaming or designed it. The filmmaker appeals to the audience’s sense of emotion by including a victim of gaming addiction who committed suicide and one who got depressed. By doing this, the filmmaker evokes sadness in the minds of the audience. The filmmaker also appeals to the audience’s sense of reason by providing statistics to back up their claims.
The filmmaker responds to the counter arguments by stating that although video games help people to have a sense of power, people can be whoever they want to be online. However, video games also take people’s sense of responsibility from them when they get addicted to it. The filmmaker also stated that video games or gamers community is a way by which gamers release the stress of working 9-5
