The novel Seedfolks is written by Paul Fleischman. In Seedfolks, a little girl named Kim decides to plant lima beans so that her father would notice her. From one chapter to the next, characters find their way to the garden that began when Kim planted her lima beans. There are many things wrong with the neighborhood and the garden. The outsiders treat it like a dump for their disposal, there isn’t enough water, and there is plenty of crime around the neighborhood. But once they found a way to connect, in other words, the garden, they solved their problems without even realizing it. Some characters find safety, some find comfort, and some find life-long relationships. Another example of this theme would be with the character Amir. He is from India and when he moved to America he got the impression that Americans were supposed to “avoid contact” and “to treat all us foes”. When he found the garden, he found a community where people grew and worked together. This theme exists in other literary works such as The Day the Crayons Quit where readers see every crayon talk about their problems. In this children’s book, every page contains a letter from each crayon to their owner, Duncan. Almost all of the crayons had complaints and issues, except for Halpern 2 and Green crayon. He’s happy to be with us. Crayons such as the pink crayon complain about not being used enough asking, “Could you please use me sometime to color the occasional pink dinosaur or monster or cowboy?” (23 )And the purple crayon is upset about not being used to color inside the lines, warning, “If you don't start coloring inside the lines soon.
