Miri Calland Mrs. Wirick English 10, 4th Hour 12 May 2024. A Little More Than Art Supplies Anyone who has small children who has read a children’s book to their child. A few lucky parents have discovered a children’s book that brings them to tears. The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt is a superb example! This book dives into letters from exasperated crayons to their owner, Duncan. These assorted crayons have so much more meaning than meets the eye. To understand the hidden meaning of this story, it is crucial to know the crayons. The book begins with Red Crayon. He explains that he feels as though Duncan makes him “work harder than any of [his] other crayons”(Daywalt 4). Red closes his letter as Duncan's “Overworked Friend”. Red feels discriminated against and takes this personally. Another crayon Duncan writes is Beige. Beige is sick of being misidentified, he said that “[he’s] tired of being called “Light Brown” or “Dark Tan” because [he] is neither”(Daywalt 5). While not directly talking about what they are feeling, they convey their emotions through their letters. For example, Purple Crayon talks about how she is over Duncan coloring outside of the lines. Purple is so angry that in her letter she threatens Duncan saying “If you DONT START COLOURING INSIDE the lines soon.I’m going to COMPLETELY LOSE IT”(Daywalt 4). Purple Crayon's emotions clearly impact her behavior in the letter. Let’s take a look at Peach Crayon. Peach has a major problem, Duncan ripped off her wrapper and left her naked. Leaving Peach so self-conscious that she is “too embarrassed to leave the crayon box”(Daywalt 14).
