Chapter One Upon reading the first chapter of Ann Martin’s Rain Reign, I began to reflect on my time working at a Montessori school’s extended day program and the autistic children I encountered. While it’s so easy to judge Rose’s father for his attitude, I can only imagine the frustration that comes from the lack of understanding he has for his daughter. I predict that one of the book’s major story lines will revolve around their relationship. Hopefully it evolves into a healthier and more sympathetic bond. As Rose mentioned her dog getting lost in a hurricane, all I could hope was that the author doesn’t kill it. I get so frustrated when there are disheartening story lines in children’s books. Had the hurricane not occurred in Rose’s small town, there would have been no story. This is an example of an integral setting within children’s literature. From the beginning of the first entry, Rose mentions the hurricane and how it is the cause of Rain escaping. In my opinion, the hurricane and its significance in this story can easily be translated to any type of dramatic change in a child’s life. As I read, I recognized that the emotions Rose experienced before, during, and after the hurricane could resemble the feelings of a child whose parents are going through a divorce, or who loses a loved one. Although the setting itself of a small town experiencing hurricane is not necessarily relatable for every student, a different event could bring on similar
