(A) Reflections on the subject matter learnt from class: Initial Thought Process When I was first introduced to the course, I thought to myself “How complex it could be?”. From my initial understanding, peer mentoring was all about reading an individual’s profile, listening to what is affecting them, and then giving them some generic advice (Mcleod, 2003). Initially, I had an assumption that everybody could become a peer mentor and you did not really need any specific skills or training to be one, and I believed that only those who are ill-mannered or have succumbed to peer pressure required counselling: I guess I was wrong all that while. Considerately, I have grown to be more mindful of people and how they feel rather than looking at them as test subjects (Duck & McMahan, 2011). Equipping myself with basic communication skills and self-control has been important to me, I am able to control my feelings and respond to the content without being compromised, and I have built good rapport with the client, as required (FME Team, 2013). This stemmed from the fact that I was conflicted between mirroring the client and helping the client. Reflection of content needs a deeper understanding of the required information for it to be applicable. According to Kamore, &Tiego (2015), multi-tasking between reflection of control and that of feeling during a peer helping conversation aids an individual in excluding the dilemma of deciding the appropriate time to apply the skills separately. For instance, reflecting information given by a student with low grades and be done simultaneously with the clients feeling of frustrations. I realized effective multitasking is attainable through a continued encounter with varied clients experiencing different challenges and expressing varied feelings. Experience with such clients will enable me to learn and thus attain the needed skills in this field. Dealing with the situation entails developing a profession oriented mind that doesn’t sway according to the clients encounter but bases decisions on multitasked approach between reflections of content and reflection of feelings and thus avoiding a dilemma.
