This semester we have read through many pieces of literature that have touched on a multitude of subjects. These works contain stories filled with interesting characters who deal with conflict in their own personal ways and moralistic themes that are left for the reader to interpret. For me, this semester has been filled with so many interesting works and Its hard to narrow down which ones I would personally say touched me. But if I have to narrow it down to three separate stories then I would have to say Self-Reliance, The Age of Reason and Uncle Toms Cabin. These stories have been the most interesting in my opinion, even if its not for a positive reason. Each had some sort of calling element which I was able to pick out and decipher for myself. They even presented moral stances which gave the readers a lot of leeway to speak for themselves about. The entire literary piece is about how the polite side of society is detrimental to ones growth as a person. This one was particulary interesting to me because he argues that in order for us to grow as people we need to be able to be honest with ourselves and the people around us. He says that in order for us to maintain healthy relationships with the ones around us then we need to be completely honest with them about our intents and what we think about them. The burden of being too polite to the point where we are not honest with ourselves and we choose to keep our true nature buried is the hook that reeled me in. Emerson has a strong way with words and likes to cut straight to the point when he is speaking on a subject. That is why I grew to love this book and appreciate a lot of other works by Emerson because of reading
