Introduction
This is a semiotic analysis on two images, the first is an illustration for “Summer at the Cape of Good Hope – Afternoon Tea on the Stoep” and the second is an advertisement for “Frank Rippingille 's Patent Cooking Stoves”, by describing the denotative meaning and offering an interpretation of the connotative meaning of the images by drawing on the knowledge of the Victorian values (Walvin 1987).

Denotative meaning
This is an advertisement for “Frank Rippingille 's Patent Cooking Stoves”. The background is of nature, bright colours are used but red is dominant. Queen Victoria is sitting on a golden throne, wearing a red dress with a blue sash draped around it and a crown on her head. There are stacks of stoves beside her and she is giving the stoves o the people. The two black men kneeling before the Queen are in their traditional attire of animal skin and fur, one of the men is accepting the stove given to him. Behind the two men there is a line of people of different race who are also wearing their traditional clothes.
On the top right hand side there is an image of an open stove with food inside the oven and pots and pans on top. On the bottom left there is a women in red kneeling and cooking, the setting is of the park and dam with a blanket laid out, she is accompanied by a gentleman and lady. On the bottom right is an old man dressed in a brown suit, a top hat and a red scarf, he is holding a sign that is advertising the stoves.
