Analysis of Synesthesia in The Book Thief In this novel by Markus Zusak the character of Death is depicted as a synesthete. This caused Death to perceive the world differently case in point, he wouldn’t see a colour instead would hear it. The use of synesthesia in literature allows the reader to discern an image that an author is trying to create but from a different point of view. Evidently, Death demonstrates synesthesia on numerous occasions throughout the entire passage an example being “When he spoke, it was the taste of a whisper” (Zusak 141).
In the novel, The Book Thief, a fictional story, author Markus Zusak demonstrates the power of words to save or destroy someone or something. The setting is WWII in Molching, Germany. Leisel is a foster child who went through a lot to get to where she is, Himmel Street. She is living with her foster parents, Rosa and Hans Hubermann. She also has a very good friend, Rudy, who is your typical Aryan boy with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Since The Book Thief is a historical fiction text, the fictitious characters interact in a realistic WWII setting in Germany. Three characters in the book Liesel, rudy, and Hans develop their identities within the parameters of the Nazi-controlled society. However, if Liesel, rudy, and Hans were characters in today's society, their lives would be different. Liesel is a small, blond girl with blue eyes that is nice and caring for the people she loves and the ones around her. Rudy Steiner is a small, skinny boy with yellow hair, he is funny and competitive, especially when it comes to racing and making fun of other people.
The theme of this book is learning to love and care for the people around. How I came to this conclusion is by how Liesel acts towards Max, her foster parents, Rudy, and her neighbors. Liesel cares for people even if they weren't like her and she doesn't understand why there is hatred in this world. She wanted the world to be a happy place for everyone including Jews to be friends with one another. Many people have been hurt by other people and death. The book, The Book Thief is about Liesel Meminger and how she deals with all this hurt and death around her. This character essay is about her because I liked how resilient she was to other people’s words and all the death and destruction. I really enjoyed reading about her and her experiences especially how she dealt with her want to be able to read. Liesel was a great character and she learns many lessons throughout the book, and it was fun to learn them with her.
Hans and Rosa Huberman happily take Liesel in as their daughter. Leisel makes many new friends while staying with the Hubermans, but is faced with many obstacles including losing her biological parents, her two best friends, and her loving foster parents all because of the Nazis and their hatred of the Jews. The one thing that never leaves Liesel is her books. In the Novel, The Book Thief, Marcus Zusak uses the themes of loss, love and resilience to illustrate the life of Liesel Meminger. The Book Thief starts off with the narrator describing different scenes of death. While going to different scenes where death occurs, the narrator comes up with death being like the Nazi flag. Also, as these scenes are being portrayed the narrator introduces us to the main character Liesel. Liesel will become the book thief after she first steals a book when her brother was buried. After this horrific event, Liesel is given to new parents where she will live a better life.
