Occupational therapists use frames of reference to help guide practice and intervention planning. Within these frames of reference are postulates that explain what each frame of reference aims to support. In the sensory integration frame of reference, several postulates and the focus of this paper was providing supported research pertaining to the postulate “if the therapist creates an environment that supports play, then the child will be more fully engaged and will have more intrinsic motivation to engage in therapeutic activities” (Kramer & Hinojosa, 2009, p. 152).

According to Fabrizi et al., children will special needs are often not able to engage in play activities and express themselves, such as children without special needs are able to (2016). The purpose of this study that was conducted was to “determine the effect of a community playgroup on the playfulness of children with special needs ages 15 mo to 3yr and the responsiveness of their caregivers” (Fabrizi et al., 2016, p. 2). A pretest-posttest research design was used with a single group to observe the effectiveness of an occupational therapy-led community playgroup (Fabrizi et al., 2016). 12 caregivers made contact to participate with their child, but due to reasons, such as availability and illness, only 8 caregivers and their children were able to participate in the experiment for 1 hour a week for 8 weeks (Fabrizi et al., 2016). The instruments used in the experiment were the Test of Playfulness Version 4.2, which measures intrinsic motivation, internal control, freedom to suspend reality, and framing, the other instrument used was observational scales developed by The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Early Child Care
