It is not a shock to anyone that serial killers come from a troubled past. Serial killers suffer abuse, or had an unhealthy environment while they grew up. The tend to have unstable families. Ranging from different issues like psychological problems, criminal activity, drug and alcohol abuse. Serial killers often come from unstable families. These families usually have a past involving criminal activity, psychiatric issues, or are alcoholics. These serial killers tend to have extremely poor relationships with their families and usually make them their fist victims. (Susan Frese, 3). Serial killers primarily kill strangers that have one or more attributes that they are looking for. Capitalism and mass migration is a common thing in today’s society. When a mass amount of people migrate to one area, it draws serial killers in. With the rise of capitalism and with mass migration to urban centres it resulted in individuals being immersed in a sea of strangers. This also proved to be a prime precondition for the emergence of serial murder given that a clear attribute of serial killers is that they prey primarily on strangers. (Kevin Haggerty, 1). Serial killers are drawn into areas that is full of people. Serial killers target strangers, people who have no meaning to them but maybe have a specific trait they are looking for, like a hair color or the build of their body. Serial killers are connected through their social and historical setting when it comes to their killings. Serial killing is strictly tied to its broader social and historical setting, it is particularly apparents when killing is in correlation to a series of broad historical changes that continue to occur over 400-500 years, usually associated with the uprising of modernity. (Kevin Haggerty, 1). Serial killers tend to stick to the areas they know, but are flooded with people they don’t know. Serial killing is completely tied to their social setting and environment. With the uprising of mass urbanization, it has altered the nature of human beings. Mass urbanization is a specific characteristic of the modern era, something that has profoundly altered the nature of a human being’s relationship by the virtue of producing unpredictable anonymity.
