As a society we are not surprised when we see the headlines of news articles with the words serial killer or mass murderer, we have grown a sense of normalcy to these words that one would think would actually be quiet freighting or at least should be. Society however has not been prepared to understand or know how to react when the killer is a child. What should be looked for, what is a red flag, is something different from this child than that one. What makes a child a murderer? Michael Hernandez was a 14 year old young man when the murder took place. Although Michael seemed like a normal teenage boy according to different articles he was actually always extremely mentally ill and insane. Hernandez showed an obsession with serial killers and actually kept a journal where he would write random thoughts, one which included, “you will become a killer and mass murderer” according to Arthur (2008).
