For the Service Learning Project, I wanted to choose something that corresponded with my major. My major is environmental science so my first thought was to pick up litter in order to rid the planet of pollution. However, the project I ended up doing was slightly more indirect. I created several activities that will later be used to teach children about pollution and how to recycle. Thus, instead of directly reducing pollution, I am teaching the children how to do it throughout their lives. This taught me that I can make an impact not only by physically minimizing pollution but also by getting other people to willingly reduce pollution too. I completed this project through San Antonio Parks and Recreation. I created four activities, which will be introduced to multiple groups of children at different times. These activities influence children to treasure the Earth, and the plants and animals that live here with us. The first activity consists of teaching kids what pollution is and what part of the environment different types of pollution effect. For example, an oil spill can be a type of ground pollution as well as water pollution. A chart will be made with the following categories, ground pollution, air pollution and water pollution. They will then each be given a picture of pollutants (ex. Smog, trash, leakage from cars, etc.) which they will be asked to tape into the correct column. In the second activity, they will learn what can be recycled and what cannot. The children will go to a park to pick up trash and …show more content…
For instance, on December thirteenth, I will be going to MLK Park to do the trash pickup activity as well as the bird feeder activity. The rest of the activities I hope to participate in as well. However, the project manager from San Antonio Parks and Recreation would like to use my ideas even if I am not able to
