Sexual Assault on College Campuses Sexual assault defined by The Oxford Dictionary is “The action or an act of forcing an unconsenting person to engage in sexual activity; a rape; (Law) a crime involving forced sexual contact, variously defined as inclusive or exclusive of rape”. The earliest use of this term can be traced back to the nineteenth century from a gentleman named Edward Coxx Mann. This is not a recently coined term however, there are blurred lines and grey areas. Sexual assault is a rising epidemic in youth across America that is being ignored by predators and lawmakers, thus making this issue harder to target. The primary concern for this essay is to address the problem of sexual assault among college campuses, focusing in North Carolina. The term “sexual assault” does have negative stigmas that are damaging to most victims. These stigmas make this issue harder to speak about, make accusations, and come to terms with the issue for victims and those around them.
