One last main cause of many of the rapes on campus is the setting. The way each student behaved changed with were they were located and places such as high-risk parties held an attitude that condoned and even encouraged rape. Boswell and Spade identifying the cause of rape helps reduce the rates by making it so faculties can recognize the issues and propose effective
The documentary, The Hunting Ground by Kirby Dick, was created specifically to spread awareness of the vast problem of sexual assault on college campuses and to attempt to show that the dilemma needs to be solved. The creator wants the viewer to know that the dilemma of these attacks that universities tried to hide in the dark is finally being given the spotlight they deserve. The spark of this idea for this documentary was the many stories of survivors across the nation from many universities, specifically the story of Annie and Andrea who helped other survivors get the justice they deserve. The film is intended for anyone who is unaware of the frequent and nationwide problem of sexual assault, specifically girls because sexual assault is
Michigan State’s handling, or frankly lack there of handling of sexual assault cases has been appalling to say the least. Administrators have chosen not to address the multiple institutional issues we have in our community and have repeatedly tried to pay off survivors in the past with large monetary gifts for their silence. This past year has been extremely trying and irritating for not only survivors, but also the rest of the Michigan State community. However, I think that it is important to remember and utilize Burke’s thoughts about joy and accountability when moving forward. We need to learn from these atrocities and we need to set an example for other universities and institutions that this will not be tolerated and the survivors will not be tolerated.
The Hunting Ground is a documentary film that documented sexually assault cases on college campuses in the United States. Schools such as Harvard University, Princeton University, and the University of North Carolina have high reports of sexual assaults on their campus but there was not been any restitution for victims. Many victim’s cases are neglected and when they are entertained the perpetrator is never prosecuted. These perpetrators are often repeat offenders and continue a cycle of sexual assault on their campus. The creators of this movie allow the viewer to see how college administrators fail to deal with these reports appropriately.
In this article, Bedera and Nordmeyer focused on rape prevention and risk reduction tips displayed on 40 university websites. The 40 institutions studied were gender-mixed and had fraternities or sororities. Their findings revealed, that only 15 of the 40 schools provided tips on sexual assault prevention. Bedera and Nordmeyer gathered 494 tips, 397 were intended towards women, 69 intended towards men, and 27 were gender neutral. There were four tips that were repeatedly aimed at women, which were: women are vulnerable, there are no safe places for women, women should never be alone, and women can’t trust anyone.
The Steubenville rape case was not an isolated incident, and sexual violence in high schools is a pervasive issue that often goes unreported. The intervention of Anonymous brought national attention to the case and sparked a conversation about rape culture and victim-blaming. People at Steubenville hosted a rally where people like Alicia, Robin, and plenty of others spoke out on their experiences and the need for more awareness of sexual assault [1]. This conversation helped to break the silence around sexual violence and encouraged survivors to speak out about their experiences. Before this situation, many victims were shamed upon and felt like they weren’t safe anymore because they were telling the truth about a terrible situation that they had to endure.
Some awareness is given to the students with an objective to eliminate the incidents of sexual assaults from the college campuses. Wilhelm states, at present some awareness activities are going on in the colleges. Students are
Every 98 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted (“Victims of Sexual Violence: Statistics”). Sexual harassment and even assault have become all too common in today’s schools, workplace, and even in social groups. Sexual harassment must end because the deviant behavior causes unfair practices in the workplace, leads to emotional and physical trauma, and hinders workers, students, and other people from advancing in their career, education or other goals. People are not aware just how much harassment occurs in the world; more education and a better spotlight on the issue via the media and business practices are just a few ways to begin to solve the poor behavior in all of its many forms.
Through the issues of sexual assault on college campuses, I think that we should change the way we respond to prevent sexual abuse in colleges. All parents that have their kids going to the colleges were worrying about that issue, so the way we respond to this problem will help a lot for the victims and eases the problem of sexual abuse in colleges. The first thing we need to do is propaganda and sexual assault prevention to students. In the college campuses, the school needs to organize classes on sexual assault issues. These classes will provide knowledge on how to recognize and prevent sexual abuse.
An additional 600 thousand are injured while drunk, and nearly 100 thousand become victims of sexual assault. College administrators’
Sexual assaults on campuses have received more attention than in the past, because of an increased number of incidents occurring. Eliminating these assaults is nearly impossible, although with the help of society, individual strategies, and the involvement of the universities, we can cut down the number of victims dramatically. Schools want their campuses to be safe, yet all schools have violence. Every student deserves the right to a safe learning environment. Should schools do more to help prevent sexual assaults on campus or, should more women carry around pepper spray like I do?

(Ito 2010) It is important for all campuses to address all students on how to be aware and not be a target. The campus also has a responsibility to encourage all students to step in when they believe someone is in trouble and as well as understanding what giving consent means. A person safety begins with them and students still need to be reminded of this, even though it is difficult to talk with students and they feel they are being offended. The University of NC at
The U of A has created several programs to prevent and fight sexual assault, but in order to determine the effectiveness of the strategies used, it is important to identify the origins of sexual assault. The Campus Climate Survey on Sexual assault and Misconduct pointed out that “45% the surveyed students had witnessed a drunk person heading for sexual encounter” explained Genisis Lara. In addition, Filbert Barrera, who is a sergeant from University of Arizona Police Department, also mentioned that alcohol is one causes of sexual assault because people do not measure the consequences of their actions, so it is easier for the person to try to “force” someone to have some kind of sexual relation without consent of the other person. Since the
