With the women’s rights movement and the end of the draft the pentagon was compelled to review the status of women in the military. (Moore) The Army committee had recommendations to separate the women’s corps to increase the specialties offered to women. The Army committee also pushed opening ROTC and military academies to women and also changed the law that required automatic discharge if a woman became pregnant. It was after these recommendations were followed that women could serve in 430 of the 467 military specialties, but they could not command any unit that had a combat mission.
Assimilation into Military Sub-Culture The military culture is its own culture within the majority culture that is in the United States. This means that those that come into the military have a new set of norms to adjust to and possibly a new set of oppression to face it if applicable to them. With the amount of African American women in the military is increasing and is causing more and more of them to assimilate to the military’s sub-culture.
Due to this over exaggeration, men are not able to create their own identity, which leads to serious gender and behavioral issues. This forced environment leads to women having to act differently as well because many people feel that “women are not held to the same standards as men” (Nicolas) Nicolas shows that the military environment affects women as well as men and forces genders to act in different ways. Gender is not universal but the military forces gender roles to be blown out of proportion. Women are not held to the same standards as men, which in our day and age should be unheard of. Nicolas’ piece extends the point that Myers makes about the military environment and genders.
In the article “ All guts, No glory” written by Molly .M. Ginty. The author explains ways women are treated in the military. Women are treated differently because of there sex. In the military women are mistreated because of the form of training they get.
It becomes difficult to read of the horrifying acts the women were succumbed to. Women in the United States were not without their share of gender discrimination. The military relied on women’s bodies for services in the war effort and “military medical officials confirmed the soliders’ need for female companionship and…encouraged servicemen to seek sexual adventures with ‘good,’ ‘clean’ women to keep up morale and the fighting spirit. ”3 At this same time, women were looked down upon and seen as sexually deviant whose only purpose was to serve men in the army.
What are some expectations that people have over women in the military? Some examples may include that they are strong and independent soldiers, have good courtship with each other, nursery, motherly figures, objects as well as supporters of the men. These assumptions and expectations of what are the women status, roles, duties, and part of the military are half of the whole concept of how social and cultural norms of war in war, but there are still more that society doesn't know. The struggles, reality, and issues that women in both the past and present wars face throughout their deployment and life after while being looked upon by the society but yet they changed the traditional views for women.
The Army as an institution has historically comprised primarily of men. Soldiering was a traditional male role. Some issues discussed over whether diversity and gender integration is that women’s inclusion in the service will change the Army culture. The Army belief system disrupts by the new women inclusion policies established by the Department of Defense. Sexual harassment and sexual assault are very serious issues happening today in the workplace. Women or men have suffered from unsolicited sexual behaviors that are typically provoked by someone “higher” in position. “Sexual harassment especially has been a fixture in the workplace since women began to work outside their homes” (Fitzgerald, 1993). It is solely the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all employees within are aware and are very cautions of laws, misconduct, and liabilities. Employers must enforce the Policy Prohibiting Discrimination and further extend those laws and guidelines to their employees.
Sexual harassment is identified as any unwelcome and unwanted sexual advances, verbal or physical behavior of sexual nature and requesting for sexual favours due to which a worker’s performance is affected, he/she suffers from psychological trauma or an offensive/hostile atmosphere is created at the workplace. The occurrence of workplace sexual harassment is linked with several risk factors. The nature of job and particularly the gender ratio at a workplace and traditionally male oriented jobs are among the significant ones. These pose an increased risk for women to face situations of getting sexually offended or harassed.
Sexual harassment arises when an employee makes continually unwelcome sexual advances or sexual favors and other physical or verbal behavior of a sexual nature to another employee against his or her will. According to a report from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), sexual harassment occurs, "when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment." Managers and supervisors play a lead role in creating a workplace culture that is free from every kind of sexual harassment; this culture will give confidence to employees and boost up their job performance as well.
