Assimilation into Military Sub-Culture The military culture is its own culture within the majority culture that is in the United States. This means that those that come into the military have a new set of norms to adjust to and possibly a new set of oppression to face it if applicable to them. With the amount of African American women in the military is increasing and is causing more and more of them to assimilate to the military’s sub-culture. At this point this assimilation goes beyond being a military wife. It grows even from filling the role of a nurse and other “womanly” role to even being a general. There have been several African American women who have made high achievement in the military though it was at times unheard of. As stated before, African American women typically serve in administrative and supportive roles. With that, there are still a certain amount of Black women who serve as officers. In fact, there are more women officers than there are male officers. It is believed that African American women will be taking more leadership positions as the years move forward. Though the number may be smaller, it is not unheard of for there to be an African American woman who is a general or higher. According to an article in Ebony Magazine, Brig. Gen. Sherian Cadoria was a “decorated” veteran with who had more than 24 years of military service. She was one of the first African American woman General in the Army. She was the director of manpower and personnel in the organization of Joint Chiefs of Staff. At a time, she was the highest ranking Black woman in the Army. Brig. Gen. Sherian Cadoria was quoted saying, “I think you have to recognize that you can be feminine, you can be caring, understanding, you can even be gentle, but there are times when you have to be tough. And you have to be able to do it when it’s necessary.” Another first African American woman who was one of the first includes Hazel Johnson-Brown.
