LITERATURE REVIEW
Adolescents are having a hard time in school when they realize that they are gay, lesbian, or bisexual. It baffles teachers, parents, counselors and other students. Sexual minority youth are having issues being bullied, having lower GPAs and negative school attitudes. It is very troubling for some youths to come out to their parents or peers and it can cause a negative effect in the household. Many surveys were done to show parent/child relationships and how the family was effected when a child told them they were gay, lesbian, or bisexual (Russel, Seif, &Troung). This study was done by interview, which used audio computer-aided self-interviews. The youth would listen to questions through headsets and respond using a laptop. The audio interview was used so that the youth wouldn’t be embarrassed and would answer the questions to the full extent. The Add Health survey asked youths several questions about their same-sex romantic attractions (Russel, Seif, & Troung). Another portion of the Add Health survey asked about their schooling, to find out their attitude towards it. They asked about their grades, school troubles, and how they felt about it. Also, during the Add Health survey they asked the youth questions over how their family accepts them and reacts to them. During one survey the participants did it at home. This survey asked questions about if they had ever had an attraction to the same sex before or the opposite sex. Boys were shown to have less problems than girls and only bisexual boys have issues with their GPA and school troubles (Russel, Seif, & Troung). Girls who are bisexual have negative feelings towards their teachers. Girls who have same-sex attraction tend to be the least close with their mothers and their mothers have the most negative attitude towards them (Russel, Seif, & Troung).
