Shakespeare and I have never really gotten along. Let me rephrase that, Shakespearean plays and I have never really gotten along. I love Shakespearean sonnets, because they are poems and I enjoy trying to figure out the metaphors behind his words. Shakespearean plays, although filled with metaphors contain difficult to understand characters. The different situations that the characters often find themselves in are unbelievable and unrelatable. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, when Juliet and Romeo decide to get married at such a young age seems to be I can with complete confidence say that I have never thought of getting married to my enemy at only fourteen. The graphic organizer was helpful because it allowed me to read the scene interpret it and explain what I thought was going on. The graphic organizer was also helpful, because the section where it said “Creative Scene Title” helped me remember some of the major themes in Romeo and Juliet. The organizer gave me an opportunity to think independently, and come up with my own ideas. Another thing that was helpful with the graphic organizer was the link that was included. The website, helped translate metaphors, words, or puns, in a more understandable way. When reading, I love trying to find the hidden metaphors that the author has included. The reason for this being; it adds not only to the story and the characters but also to the authors writing style. In Shakespearean sonnets, it is very obvious that there are metaphors because it is a poem. However, with Shakespeare’s plays, it is more difficult to find the meaning behind the metaphors. This is because of several reasons; number one the language is difficult to understand, two the context doesn’t always seem relevant, and finally because the characters/situations are not relatable. However, with everything that we have done this unit, from the graphic organizer to the in class discussions, has made me more aware of the metaphors in Romeo and Juliet and other Shakespearean plays, and has overall increased my appreciation for his plays. It has also made reading Shakespeare more fun for me, which I think is the most important
