Definition: The colonists despised the king of England, as they believed he abused his power and denied them natural rights because of their lack of representation in Parliament. Freedom Even though the colonists did not have a clear understanding of freedom because they were under the rule of a tyrant, the Speech in the Virginia Convention and Crisis #1, written by Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine, both motivated the colonists and congress to aspire and achieve freedom. Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry both used very similar quotes to motivate the colonists into realizing that fighting the British king would grant them freedom at last. No matter how many times the American colonists attempted to resolve things through petitions, remonstrations, and arguments the British were right there, smiling insidiously, but only proved to snare their feet. The colonists were tired of these lies and insults, so this is where Paine and Henry step in.
When you are born you are given natural rights. John Locke once said that we have the right to life, liberty, and property. Well, King George III and the british parliament did everything in their power to take these freedoms from the colonist. The colonist put up with this at first, but as they starting listening to patriot authors and using their own reason, they realized they were being cheated of their natural rights and freedoms. Two of these patriot authors, being Thomas Jefferson and John Dickinson, wrote in Continental Congress; “In our own native land, in defence of the freedom that is our birthright, and which we ever enjoyed till the late violation of it- for the protection of our property, acquired solely by the honest industry of our forefathers and ourselves, against violence actually offered, we have taken up arms” (Document 2).
The system of checks and balance is what the country uses to this day. It seemed at the time many were focus on creating a government much different than the one they fought against.(1) The bill of rights protects and guarantees basic individual rights which has help protect the country rights to this day. Also George Washington was originally reluctant to attend the constitutional convention in which the constitution of the United States was sign and created.
Before this, the colonists were never really trusted this much and just about everyone did not have a problem with the Bill of Rights. It benefited the safety and the colonist’s livelihood in general like they had never felt before. Some historians believe that the Bill of Rights was one of the most important factors in being able to legitimately call America the “land of the free”. The Bill of Rights also played a large role in establishing governmental policies and laws which outline our way of life even today. Political culture establishes the backdrop against which politics unfold, it establishes the outer limits of what is possible, or even probable in the political realm. Texas political culture can be described as traditionalistic and individualistic. Texas traditionalist political culture believes in the values that policies are designed to preserve social order in the state, politicians come from society’s elite, and politicians have a family obligation to govern. While on the other hand, individualistic political culture believes that government should be limited when it comes to the lives of the public, individual rights of the citizens should be the main focus of a government rule, and a stronger support of personal politics rather than elitism.
