PRELIMINARY STATEMENT Rosemary Henderson was arraigned in Yolo County Superior Court on May 30, 2016, for allegedly violation Health & Safety Code § 11379, subd. (a). Henderson pleaded not guilty and pursuant to Penal Code § 1538.5, moved to suppress the fruits of the search –the two baggies and the statements she made- arguing that the search of the trunk exceed the scope of any consent she had given. The trial court denied the motion. Henderson then withdrew her not guilty plea and pled guilty to the sale of a controlled substance.
Kathy Copeland is currently the Vice President of Human Services at Goodwill of Orange County (GIOC). Copeland soon began working in nonprofits after graduating from University of California Los Angeles because of her passion to work with and for people. Although Copeland prioritizes her family, Copeland chose to leave being a stay-at-home mom and come back to work because of the great job opportunity here at GIOC.
Dill Driscoll has made a huge impact on many lives with bringing Manna Drop to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The Manna Drop is where faculty and students give food to families on Thanksgiving that lack money to buy it themselves. Some families are not eligible for government assistance and depend on Feeding America and Manna Drop to supply them with food. Manna Drop is a great way to teach students to give back to the community and to get out of their comfort zone. Students have stated that “It is the most meaningful thing they have done at ABAC.”
These made the Rethinkers not just want to help their school with the food issue but to help their community. They first replaced the plastic silverware. They talked to there school nutritionist. They talked about

Last year almost 21 million kids nationwide are on free or reduced lunches. These kids eat their main meals at school and don’t get much while at home. During the summer this can be a disaster. While children in poverty are on long breaks, their families can’t afford to keep feeding them. This results in very non nutritional meals or no meals at all.
She pointed out that unhealthy foods are more accessible to low-income families than healthy options (Olivares, 2014). She advocated for these low-income families by saying: “They [low-income earners] only eat less healthy foods out of necessity, and it’s hard for kids of those families to eat healthy when the public-school system offers them junk as well.” (Olivares, 2014, p20). The children to go to school, eat junk food that is provided for them, and then go home to an unhealthy meal to end their day. It is an endless cycle that is hard to escape (Olivares, 2014).
Did you know that 1 in 5 U.S. kids don’t get the food they need every day? This negatively impacts kids’ health and development, but this can also negatively impact them academically as well as emotionally and socially. No Kid Hungry is an organization that is making a difference regarding this problem. No Kid Hungry was founded by Billy Shore and his sister Debbie Shore in 1984. Since then, No Kid Hungry has raised and invested more than $528 million in the fight against hunger, and has won the support of national leaders in business, government, health and education, sports, and entertainment.
She believes that it is better to trust the body and listen to what the mind is saying in terms of what is needed. She believes that there is too much moralization going on towards food, which is why people mostly think too much food is bad and prefer lesser amounts in terms of health. She states that HAES (Health at Every Size) nutritionists, specifically naming Michelle Allison “suggest that adult humans will eat in a way that is good for them, given the opportunity”. People will mainly eat what they believe will benefit them in terms of health.
Summer brought a conclusion to AP exams, AP and Honors classes, and Swim Team. Although I grateful for the much deserved break, I had an overwhelming urge to become an active member for my community. I knew I needed to obtain my mark in the world in a special way during the summer large-scale or not. However, I never thought I would volunteer at a food bank. As an acutely withdrawn and self-conscious person, I’d much rather prefer to assist out behind the scenes, as a dutiful background member.
On November 9th, I attended an event in the glass lounge that was ran by campus ministry, involving homelessness and hunger. This event correlates with Gwynedd Mercy University’s theme of #MakeMercyReal because it allows us to show mercy and help those who are in need. This event has changed my outlook on a great deal of issues that I did not know were prevalent at our school and has made me want to make a difference. In a country that wastes billions of pounds of food each year, it's almost shocking that anyone in America goes hungry. Yet every day, there are millions of children and adults who do not get the meals they need to thrive. We work to get nourishing food – from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers – to people in need. At the same time, we also seek to help the people we serve build a path to a brighter, food-secure future.
In some schools some principals superintendents have made a decision to opt out of the Healthy choice foods and make there own semi-healthy foods that kids like. To reduce waste and bring back students who have opted to pack a lunch or go off campus for fast food, his districts cafeterias have installed stir-fry stations with abundant vegetables so students can have meals made to order. and he’s added spice bars so kids can even the bland. In schools some principals and administrators are starting to take action.
The fact that Americans, home of some of the most obese humans in the world, are going hungry is indiscernible. Today I stand before you to explain why we, as fellow Americans, need to extend help in the growing effort to fight the war against hunger in America. Before learning what you can do to help, we must first understand the extent of hunger in America. Then we will discover the cause of hunger in the United States. Finally I will present several ways you can contribute to the fight.
