Ultimately, as by now you may now, animal cruelty is a gargantuan problem in our society today. If our society doesn 't take care of the world we live in and the animals that help it thrive and prosper, we are not going to last very long. We need to cherish the minuscule things and make sure we respect every aspect of it. Animal cruelty does not need to occur nor does it serve any purpose in creating a balanced society. This abuse and cruelty leaves its mark not only physically but emotionally, short-term, as well as long-term. Many abused animals are unable to trust again, causing an uprising in the number of animals in shelters. When people abuse animals, the animals become aggressive or frightened and end up in shelters. In the “Journal of Emotional Abuse” it states that, “There are parallels in both the short- and long-term effects regardless of the type of abuse, including post-traumatic stress symptoms as indicated by depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, self-blame, self-destructive, risk-taking, or externalizing symptoms seen through inappropriate expression of anger or delinquency.” From this, we can see that a multitude of mental health issues can arise that stem from animal abuse leaving both short and long-term
