Have you ever heard of the first African-American woman to go to college, get a B.A, become a teacher then a principal(no, I am not talking about the principal Mrs. Brown) I 'm talking about Mary Jane Patterson. She was born September 24, 1840 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Mary 's parents, Eliza Patterson and Henry Irving were runaway slaves that managed to take care of four kids (Mary, John,Emma and Chanie ann). In 1852, Patterson 's family left Raleigh and moved to Oberlin , Ohio because they wanted their children to go to college.
And her name was Henrietta Lacks. She was born on August 1, 1920 in Roanoke, Virginia and was originally named Loretta Pleasant. No one is quite sure of how her name became Henrietta Lacks. The only clue that was found was her mother’s middle name, which was Lacks. Her mother’s name was Eliza Lacks Pleasant and she died giving birth to Henrietta’s ninth sibling in 1924.

Clara Barton-Angel of the Battlefield Clarissa Harlowe Barton born on December 25, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts lived a remarkable life. She was the fifth child of Stephen and Sarah Barton. Her father was a farmer and state legislator and had served in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783). Clara’s mother was a homemaker, however, Clara was often under the care of her older brothers and sisters. She became a well renowned woman in the history of the United States and in women history she showed that a woman can do the same things as a man.

Mathematician Kelly Miller advanced the intellectual life of African Americans, earning several advanced degrees. He was the first black man to attend Johns Hopkins University. His journey to success started when a minister noticed his aptitude for mathematics, he was then sent to the Fairfield Institute to study, earning himself a scholarship to Howard University. From 1887 to 1889 Miller performed graduate work in Mathematics, Physics, and Astronomy.

Gravesend is a neighborhood located in the most southern section of New York City in the borough of Brooklyn. Being one of the first colonial English towns in America, it holds a significant amount of historical content regarding the growth of America itself as a country, and the issues that it had once held in regards to equality. Women in particular, held limited rights that prevented them doing important roles in society. Many were denied the opportunity to leave their mark upon America, and returned to the role of a housewife.

Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. As a young girl, she went to public schools, but for college she attended Brooklyn College and graduated in 1946 cum laude with a Bachelor in sociology. Not only was she giving her time to further her career, Shirley had an interests in helping children. In 1946-1953, she dedicated those years to being a nursery teacher and performed her duties in a daycare. From there, she received her Masters at Columbia University in early childhood education in 1956.
