Short stories are written to share a lesson, or show and experience for the reader to relate to their own lives. Most stories show a challenge that someone has to overcome, such as a physical threat, or a mental confrontation that they have to face. In the story “Lemon Brown” by Walter Dean Myers, one of the two main characters, Lemon Brown, faced both types of challenges while having taught a message to the protagonist Greg Ridley. LIkewise, in the story “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, Mrs. Jones caught a child named Roger who tried to steal her purse for a pair of shoes. Meaning, the woman had gone through the same sad experiences this young boy was now going through. This story shows the reader, you shouldn’t judge from the outside. Look deeper into someone to find real reasons and emotions. And always help others even if they hurt your feelings or try to steal from you.

Mrs. Jones asked me what I needed the money for. I knew I could trust her. She had given me somewhat of a shelter and food so I decided to tell her the truth. The truth sounded better in my head though because when I told her it was for shoes she just stared at me. I didn’t what to do.

The most obvious why Mrs.Jones is caring is because she lets Roger into her house even when he tried to steal her purse, I know I would never just let him in my house if he tried to steal my purse I would of called the police. First of all she brings Roger to her house and then makes him dinner. I would never make a boy dinner who tried to steal my purse.

The story is about a boy named Roger who tries to steal Mrs. Jones purse, she takes him to her house and takes care of him. Roger could be described as lonely because he has nobody home at his home, he is very respectful of Mrs. Jones, and he tries to steal.
On page 31 Mrs. Jones says to Roger “You ought to be my son”. She changed his life by giving him discipline. She tried to treat him with respect because she wanted him to stop pocketbook stealing and wanted him to behave himself. She wanted him to be a better person because she did horrible things when she was his age. She wanted him to behave because she saw him with a dirty face and some worn out shoes she was trying to tell him to behave, so he could get a good education.
Mrs. Jones, “...simply turned around and kicked…,” the boy. She also forcefully had the boy, “... pick up my pocketbook, boy and give it here…” In addition to that, the woman was very threatening. For example, Mrs. Jones, told the boy that he would remember her once she was “through with,” him. These parts are significant because it portrays a big part of Mrs. Jones’ personality.
The story ends with her walking him out and closing the door so fast he isn't able to say thank you to her. She also leaves him with the advice to behave himself from now on. The reader is able to infer that this short time spent with Mrs. Jones (and the kindness she offers him) will go a long way in perhaps having a lasting impact on Roger’s life. Hughes’s short story still resonates today when examining the parallels to today’s society and the negative consequences and criminalization for marginalized peoples, when empathy and kindness are better factors in helping those in need. Roger’s first question to Mrs. Jones when they get to her apartment is “You gonna take me to jail?”
Sometimes in life we are afraid, then someone shows us kindness and the world around us changes. However his victim, Mrs. Jones shows him kindness, but not at first, and he learns kindness comes from unexpected places.
