The book starts out by saying that Bruno is a boy who lives in Berlin during the Nazi invasions. He came home from school and found Maria who is their maid packing for him. He asked her what was going on then he went to ask his mom what was going on. His mom said they were moving away. Bruno’s dad got a new job and they are leaving because he has to move. Bruno knows that his dad’s move is because of someone they call Fury. His mom tries to be cool with the move and makes Bruno think everything will be okay. She tells him that he has to tell all his friends bye and that he is not coming back at all. She then blames the move on his dad and they argue. When Bruno is upstairs he meets Lieutenant Kotler who works for his dad at his new job. He feels strange about Lt. Kotler and thinks he is mean and will have nobody to play with. Bruno then looks out his bedroom window and gets a sick feeling. But he does see other people and kids. Bruno has a sister named Gretel but he calls her trouble from day one. She is older than he is and treats him really bad because he is so small. They talk for a little bit about how they both really hate their new house. They think it will only be for a little while but it's not. Bruno tells his sister about the other children he sees from his bedroom. He tells her they don’t look friendly to him. Then she looks out she sees the same thing Bruno saw. The view they saw was revealed and they see nothing but men. Like they see men, boys, and older guys. They only see dirt yards and buildings and chimneys everywhere. Neither one really knows what they are looking at and they actually say it's the country because they have never seen it before.
