The short-term impact of the steam engine was how it provided quicker transportation due to the rapid spread of railroads and increased the population in many cities. This created new jobs, forcing people to move into cities, which shot up in terms of population. In the source shown above, we see many fancy-dressed people on and watching the steam-powered train. Since many people travelled far and wide to see the first railway because it was an important part of the industrial revolution, the population of Britain doubled to around 3 million people in 1851.
