Affirmative action should be used towards college admissions because it allows a fair evaluation of applicants and compensates for gender and racial inequalities. This policy was originally put into place for white veterans and women, but after the Civil Rights Movement, it began to include minorities. The action does not make it easy for students to get into college based on just their race and only makes up for their disadvantages. Still many conservative whites argue that it is seen as reverse racism and that white students are being discriminated against. Things like the FHA (Federal Housing Administration) and GI Bill gave enormous funds to white veterans while black veterans did not receive anything. FHA also favored racial segregation and banned people of color from living in white neighborhoods. This started a huge gap economically between white Americans and minorities. Due to the segregation between whites americans and African Americans and the decay of black communities, the Civil Rights Movement sprung up.The movement fought for minority groups and women to have fair and equal chances in education and employment. From this movement, President John F Kennedy signed the policy In 1961 to end discrimination of people’s race, creed, color, or national origin. Affirmative action programs have played a crucial role for women, and from this policy, they have been the biggest winners. A study published in 1995 indicated that affirmative action helped women more than people of color. It helped women not just College acceptance but career paths as well. Today, when going over that statistics in many colleges usually have
