College Athletes Should Be Getting Paid College athletics are a major deal to fans all over the United States. Something about people cheering on their former college or their favorite university can really bring out the fan in everyone. Some states do not have professional sports teams so cheering on college teams is the closest thing they have to the professional sports team experience. This brings up the topic of college athletes getting paid to play the sports they love. The idea of college athletes getting paid is a largely debated topic amongst people from all over the country.
Should College Football Players Get Paid? If professional players get paid to play, should college players get paid as well? Should college football players get paid? It’s the students choice if they play sports or not, many colleges could afford to pay the players, but others wouldn't have the funds, also the NCAA and it’s member institutions wouldn't have the funds to pay every player.
"Over the last decade, the debate of whether or not college athletes should be paid has intensified, and many athletes, as well as coaches, have begun to advocate for the cause." (TIMES) Tyler Harnett, a writer at the Huffington Post, took his standpoint on the topic in the article "Why College Athletes Should be Paid," which clearly states his claim, college athletes should be paid. Personally, I disagree with Harnett's viewpoint and I don't believe college athletes should be paid due to education, funding, and overall fairness. To summarize Harnett's article, he starts by talking about his opponents and their viewpoints on the situation, "They are already getting a scholarship, don't be greedy."
Therefore should college athletes get paid? Well if they do once they graduate they will live a good life. They have enough money to pay for their house bills or etc. But what if college athletes would actually get paid,but will it be fair if only the good ones get paid and the not so good ones not?
Do they not deserve to be paid for their hard work and dedication? They put in so much effort to perform the best they can at their games or meets and they do all of this on top of whatever school work they get. In a Scholastic News article, one proponent expresses his opinion on why athletes should be paid. He states, “It's unfair that college athletes don't get paid.
They are able to be provided with those luxurious resources that non-athletes do not
College is a place for students to obtain a college degree and help them to get ahead on their “real world” careers. Athletic departments in college have become huge money incomes in the past ten years; college football and basketball are even shown on the television. This has resulted in many believing these athletes deserve to be paid for their contribution to the schools athletic income. However athletes in college are given the opportunity to play the sport that they love as well as receive a top education. For some players a $20,000+ per year tuition is not enough, they want to be paid with more than just a scholarship.
It's a controversial topic, whether college athlete be paid or not. College athletes should not be paid. Their scholarships are payment enough, paying them could make the public lose interest in college sports and they earn way more than someone with just a high school diploma. If they were paid, it seems like they'd be benefiting too much.
Should college athletes be paid? I think they should. I found three main reason why other people and myself think that college athletes deserve pay. One, you can just pay the sports that produce the most revenue. Two, these student athletes put in lots of work and even sometimes have to miss class to go to the sports event.

The million dollar question; should college athletes be paid? This is an immense debate, but if you were to ask me, I would say yes, college athletes should be paid. There are a plethora of reasons why college athletes should get paid. College athletes should get paid because of the amount of time they put into their sport, the amount of money everyone else is making off of them, and their overall importance to the school. There are a myriad of reasons that people can argue the opposite way, but, the reasons they should get paid definitely outweigh the reasons they shouldn’t get paid.
College athletes deserve to be paid because they are the only ones not being paid in the college sports industry. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) generates eleven billion dollars annually, some of which could, and should go to college athletes. “USA Today reported last year just how much money the top 10 coaches in college football made. Nick Saban from Alabama topped the list earning roughly $5.5 million in 2013 alone” (Seibold). The coaches are making millions of dollars and the players aren’t.
Others say it’s the road to pros. The one thing it most certainly is: a business” (Siebold ). College sports are most certainly a business, and business has employees which in this case are the players. They should get paid because of the number of countless hours of work they put in. Work is time and time is money, but not to these student athletes.
College athletes already get their education free why should they get paid for playing a sport they love playing. What do you think, should college athletes get paid for playing the sport there in? Well I don’t think so and in this paper I will tell you and give you reasons why they shouldn’t be paid. College athletes are already getting a free education they shouldn’t be allowed to be paid. My topic is why college athletes shouldn’t get paid.
