Gist Statement: “Serve or Fail”, a text written by Dave Eggers, published in the New York Times in 2004, argues that colleges should consider establishing a volunteer service requirement for students to graduate. Para. 1&2. Says: Dave Eggers reports that college students are done with finals, and are more than ready to break from school.
The newly changed law that high schoolers can’t skip college and go pro is thought to be changed in the future. The current law says that the athlete must be at least 19 years old to enter the league. Whether the law is for or against high schoolers going pro, it will change basketball at all levels. From peewee to pro it will all be different. Being able to succeed in the NBA without going to college is a big topic of controversy in the sports industry.
Giving back to the community is a great way to learn and grow as a person, making this requirement one for the moral status of students instead of focusing on the academic status. For example, needing 10 service hours before the end of the year is the required amount of hours for NJHS. Having this rule in place helped me grow as a person and learn how it feels to give back to the community and help people. One of the events I remember is helping out at 5th grade night and helping the future students of Creekside learn their way around the school. In summary, this rule helped me learn and grow as a person by teaching me ways to give back to the community and help
Requiring community service from students allows them to become better educated on their personal impacts on society. Community service is defined as voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area. The main goal of community service is to leave a positive impact on the world, making it a stronger and healthier place. A community service requirement to graduate from high school is beneficial because it can boost students' physical and mental health, be a positive way to gain exposure to new experiences, and be an overall good way to give back to the community.
Even though generosity is a virtue, installing this sense of charity can actually lead to the people who are doing the volunteer work to feel like they are superior to those they are
It removes the financial burden from students and guides them through the admissions process. In order for students to be eligible for this program, they must complete eight hours of community service hours per semester and maintain a GPA of 2.0 (“About Tennessee Promise”). This is a program that thousands of students are taking advantage of. Many of those are students who did not previously intend to pursue any type of postsecondary education. More than 80% of the Tennessee Promise students returned for a second semester
I believe that students should not be required to do community service, by forcing students to do community service it does many things to the students social life and school life. Forcing students to do community service can cause stress towards the students, Students already have a stressful year especially seniors sense they have to submit tests and applications. Adding more to the plate of the students plate will cause them to rush things like school work and other things because community service requires so much time that that the student may not have.
To allow High school students to enter the pros would be great for them for many reasons but just to be allowed to have a job is an amazing thing for many teens to have right after high school. They would have a great steady income coming in for them so they really wouldn't have to worry about if they can get money at all. Where they could just have a job right off the bat they also wouldn't have to worry about the struggles of finding a job to support them until they could go which is a big relief for many students. And, by allowing them to do so they would be allowed to start their life easier with no worries of having enough money to live. Another great reason is that they would be able to expose their talents as soon as they can.
Doing Your Share for Your Diploma (A description on personal preference of community service) Helping and serving your community is often a personal choice and has a great deal to serve about character. Community service also does a great deal in building someone’s character in a beneficial way. Due to this, many high schools have started incorporating community service into their graduation requirements. However, these requirements come only in hours, not specificity of the service done.
Some high school graduates do not have the skills necessary to live on their own. This brings up the question, “should high school students have to pass a basic skills test to graduate?” The answer is yes, according to 59% of people on debate.org. Students that don't have the ability to do basic skills like wash clothes or cook food do not have a place in adult society. Wouldn't you agree that if someone can not support themself then they should not be allowed to live on their own?
Furthermore, 100 community service hours should be a requirement for high school graduation. Since many teens already have a lot on their plates with homework and extracurricular activities they often put themselves first above helping others. Also, many teens spend their weekends locked up in their rooms or just watching tv all day, they could do something very productive with the time they are wasting. With this in mind, community service not only helps your community but it helps get students out of their houses.
The feeling one gets after doing something good for others around us is not explainable, but it sure helps us feel more human and develop a better view of the things around us, what if children and youth where exposed to the same feeling, in my opinion children and youth will start participating more and more in community service projects to feel that they did something for the community. Charity work should not be mandatory and people should not have community service requirements to graduate, get a job or have a scholarship. The feeling of doing good is simply washed away when charity works becomes mandatory, youth who want to volunteer will do more but those who are not really interested will have a negative idea for volunteering and community service. The problem is that many schools, institutes and universities around the world use the mandatory community service for graduation. For example the university I study in has mandatory 80 hours of community service to get your final
Volunteering should be done intrinsically. Many students find community service so difficult, time consuming, and not enjoyable. Therefore, they tend to only complete the required hours without any essential effort. To call mandatory community service 'volunteering ' is a problem because then we begin to confuse the distinction between an activity that is willingly done and something that is obligatory and perhaps not always rewarding. Volunteering should be something you choose to do because you want to do it, not because somebody made you do it.
Community service does not only have a profound impact on our community, but the impact it has on the individual people is even greater. The concept of community service has always been something that I grew up with, and now that I am older I better understand how important community service is for society. I have participated in community service activities. Starting in elementary school, I helped feed the homeless and rescue animals. Even with my wide range of volunteer experience, it was difficult to find an activity that would be meaningful and fulfill my thirty-hour obligation for my senior project.
The effects of volunteering can range from many helpful characteristics. From helping those in need, giving back to the community, working for worthwhile causes, and overall helping someone with their health, mentally and physically. Volunteering can affect many people in different ways, but what most do not know is that it can help with
