Euthanasia is the practise of intentionally and painlessly ending a person’s life in order to relieve their pain and suffering due to an incurable and painful disease. Euthanasia is also referred to as assisted suicide. While more medical conditions than ever before can be cured with modern medicine, many serious medical conditions still have not been cured, causing severe pain and suffering to those affected.

Euthanasia is currently illegal in all Australian states. Euthanasia should be legalised in Australia as it will provide relief form suffering, it will allow us a choice regarding the end of our lives and it will also allow the ethics surrounding euthanasia to be more closely regulated.

Euthanasia should be introduced in Australia because it will allow many people’s suffering to be relieved. When euthanasia is legalised, it will be strictly regulated and to be eligible patients must meet specific criteria depending on the particular person, their condition and the request they make. Euthanasia has been legalised in certain states of America and various countries across Europe. Since Australians cannot find the relief they need in their own country, many travel overseas to where euthanasia is legalised. According to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office - Dignitas, an organisation providing people who aren’t Swiss the assistance they require to die under Swiss law reported 222 people who travelled to Switzerland and used this method in 2015. If so many people want to use euthanasia to end their suffering that they are willing to travel to another country to receive treatment, why are we preventing them from receiving the treatment they so desperately desire in the comfort of their own homes and their own
