Should Online Schools Be Taught

George Savile once said, “Education is what remains when we have forgotten all that we have been taught”. This quote means that the education that you have from school will stay with you forever. If this is the case, then shouldn’t the students be able to decide how they are taught in order to understand the content they are learning? Many people think that online schools is an unsuccessful and wasteful way of learning and students should be kept from it. I am strongly against schools keeping kids from attending WAVA High School because the kids will have more flexible schedules, better sleep schedules, and significantly fewer distractions than a brick and order school. During a study, a mother that had a child from a brick and order school that recently switched to online schools says “My youngest has some trouble focusing. At home there are very little distractions and he can do his work without being distracted by a classroom full of kids”. This demonstrates that it is easy to be distracted in traditional public schools for students due to all of the chaos from the other kids and the drama going around so when you are enrolled in online school, there is a small chance you will be sidetracked from others. All high schoolers move on to different lessons at their own pace, so when students are in online school, they can move at their rate and can have time to focus in on the lesson without the whole class completely moving on without them. When I was enrolled in a brick and order school, I was not able to stay engaged in my work because of all of the side conversations and rumors going around, so when I became involved with WAVA, it was like a whole new world! This demonstrates that through online school, I eventually had the capability to understand the content that I was learning. Also, this improved my grades and my confidence in the knowledge that I was increasing dramatically. This belief may have some merit on the surface. However, most students in online school are very involved in the class and even form a relationship with each other. If people have a problem (either with school or their personal lives), other students will help them out by sharing their knowledge and giving advice. WAVA provides many social events like homecoming, hiking, etc. which is a great way to become friends with your classmates in person and get out of the house.
