Poetry is an important part of literature which conveys an author 's ideas across to the reader through the use of descriptive language. Poetry helps an author to express their inner emotions and often incorporates various poetic devices which enriches the text. Poetry gives the reader a different perspective and when read closely, can give the audience a look into the authors imagination. Likewise, poetic devices enhance the writing and can drastically change the mood of the poem, as well as, how the reader interprets the poem. Poetic devices are important in literature because they help to convey a message, add spontaneity to a poem, and give the reader a strong visual.
Julia Alvarez, in her poem “’Poetry Makes Nothing Happen’?”, writes that poems do play a role in people’s lives. She supports her idea by using relateable examples of how poems might change someone’s life. Her first example is simple, poetry can entertain someone on long drives. This does not only aply to long dirves however, Alvarez uses this to show that poetry does not have to have a big influence on someone’s life, instead it can affect a person in the smallest of ways, such as entertainment. The second example describes poetry comforting someone after the loss of a loved one.
The article, as aforementioned, is basically a palette of evidence trying to prove why poetry is such a crude and raw form of language and expression, and why it still matters.

This can be a result of students being overworked throughout high school, and simply completing a paper to receive the credit. By doing this, the school system risks drawing out the enjoyment and curiosity posed by reading. Most of the time poetry can be very pleasing to the ear; however, at times it can be written in a manner that is odd. Some poetry is written in a way that the reader can “hear”, “feel”, “see” or “taste” elements in the poem. Some poems may rhyme while others may not need to in order to convey the message.
My feelings and views have changed on poetry, since reading these poems. I didn’t realize there were different types of poetry writings such as concrete poetry, which uses words as well as varying type sizes and fonts. These types of poems give the readers a visual form to the poem. From the reading material in Unit 3, I learned how to read and understand a poem, such as “Red Wheelbarrow”, written by William Carlos Williams, in 1923. When I first read this poem, I just read it.

Poetry is a very unique type of writing. Poetry allows people to express their emotions in a way they feel comfortable. Every poem has a meaning to it, whether it is talking about food, interest, or a moment in their lives. Readers often mistake the poet as the narrator, although in many cases this is true. Many poets are the narrators and the poems are about their personal life.
I saw the army as something to do, and it made me sad to realize I loved poetry. I loved it and I couldn’t pursue it because when I got out of the army I would be 21, and would no longer be considered youth, so I did the unthinkable: I told the army I had changed my mind. To me, poetry was no longer a hobby, but a passion. I wrote poetry before I did homework, practiced while in the shower, doing dishes, or walking down the hallways.
Like any style of literature, poetry features unique elements that help to set it apart from other types of writing. Poetry can follow set rules, such as the lines and syllables that are required to make a sonnet, or they can have no rules at all, as can be seen in free verse poetry. Each specific style of poetry has a slightly different type of audience, such as people who admire the structure of classic poems or people who simply love the ability to express their feelings by using the most beautiful words possible, and they all work together to give poetry its important place in the world of literature. Why are music classes mandatory subjects in schools? They really aren’t as beneficial as people believe they are. Music classes shouldn’t be required because they’re replaceable, unnecessary, and sometimes harmful to students who don’t want to take them. All of these cancel out any “benefits” that mandatory music classes have. Electives are fine, but as mandatory classes, they’re either worthless or harmful.
The three year old boy was a genius at creating poems within three minutes. However, his father refused to provide him opportunities to improve his skills. Instead, he frequently took the boy to banquets held by the rich and would teach how to make a poem, in order to make some money. As time passed, the genius boy had grown mature, but he had lost his talent to make poems because of lack of education. The story teaches us that no matter how great your gifted talent is, you will still lose it if you don’t practice it.
