Personal Narrative-Slam Poetry

I was a poet, and I really, didn’t even know it. When poetry was introduced to me again in my senior year, I expected the worst: mindlessly going through finding out why this poet decided to have a blue bench instead of a red one. Boring. Instead, I was introduced into the world of slam poetry. I picked a poem by Gwendolyn Brooks and performed in front of my school. It was enjoyable. Soon enough, I tied second place performing Honey by Andrea Gibson and making it onto my high school’s first ever slam team. My team consisted of 5 others, 4 seniors and 1 juniors, I had seen them all around before but never really got to know them. You bet our first couple of practices were extremely awkward. Albeit, the more we got into the meaning behind our poetry I learned much about them and grew to love them and see them as family. Then came Monday Meetups and Holy Grounds, meeting Slam Teams of other schools, more people who like this poetry idea. …show more content…

I saw the army as something to do, and it made me sad to realize I loved poetry. I loved it and I couldn’t pursue it because when I got out of the army I would be 21, and would no longer be considered youth, so I did the unthinkable: I told the army I had changed my mind. To me, poetry was no longer a hobby, but a passion. I wrote poetry before I did homework, practiced while in the shower, doing dishes, or walking down the hallways. I found lines in everything I did, and I love it. Never have I ever found something so wonderful as poetry, especially slam
