Dress Codes: Positivity over Prejudice
According to the Data Administration, “only 51% of students feel a sense of belonging at school” because of this, school systems should do all that they can to help students feel supported, including abolishing certain harmful punishments such as dress code. School dress codes should be abolished because dress codes have unfair biases towards specific students and if students get in trouble for their clothes they won't feel uplifted and supported at school.
Students need positivity and acceptance to feel supported at school, especially when it can feel like they are being told they can't do so much already. letting students express themselves with their clothes can take a weight off their shoulders. Isha Pendharker demonstrates this by saying, “in order for students to get to the point where they can learn they need to feel a sense of belonging” (Pendharker). This demonstrates that when staff and teachers add another burden to students' school experience, it could directly affect their learning.

If dress codes only target specific types of people,it can promote separation and inequality between students, making them feel less than. NEA News states, “targeting styles of clothing that are mostly associated with a particular minority group is discriminatory ” (Barrett). This illustrates, instead of focusing on having students all look the same, they should prioritize normalizing other cultures, which could teach uncultured students to accept people for what they believe. Plus, Olivia Soloman at Duquesne University basically states that female students are singled out and objectified for unjust dress code violations more so than their male peers. In other words, dress codes are unfair. So, schools should not keep dress codes because they don’t teach students that all people are equal and teach students to be ashamed of their culture or
