A current contentious issue it the dilemma of whether or not to pay student-athletes. On one side of the argument are those who believe that a fiscal compensation of more than a basic living expenses scholarship would corrupt college athletics. On the other side it the believe that athletes who generate millions of dollars should be fairly compensated for their talents and risk their bodies take. What is just as interesting as these opposing sides is the way the movement is slowly occurring. Since the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was established in 1906 is has held firm on the rule that all participants must keep their armature status. The CAPA specifically focuses on obtaining compensation for football and basketball players.
A major factor that has left these workers defenseless is the socio economic situations they come from. I will examine the student-athletes backgrounds here to see if this prevents them from participating.
Since only 17,000 athletes are currently part of the CAPA is will see what time constraints create a lack of incentive for student-athletes to become involved. I will look at how many of these student-athletes would be considered to receive fiscal compensation and how the CAPA looks to attract other student-athletes.
A recent important development in the movement if the United Steelworkers pledging to provide resources to back the CAPA. I intend to examine why this decision was made, what new benefits it brings, and the new change that could be possible.
I will look at the current level of compensation that is provided and compare that to the benefit that the other parties are
