I believe that the benefits of European Exploration outweigh the costs because it gives people like me opportunities to make money and it gives the world different seafaring and geographical advances. There are many different reasons that the benefits far outweigh the costs of European Exploration, leading mainly to new opportunities. The benefits of the Age of Exploration do not outweigh the costs because of all the suffering that Exploration comes with. Firstly, on the Negative Consequences side of the Exploration Chart, the text says, “Diseases- smallpox.” This proves how the benefits of the Age of Exploration did not outweigh the costs because it paved the way for foreign diseases that my people were not immune to, and made them suffer along the way. In addition, on the same part of page one on the Exploration Chart, the text says, “slavery, forced conversions, starvation and overwork of natives.” This shows how, along with the diseases that amounted to such great amounts of suffering for the Taino, the pale-skinned foreigners that came to our land inflicted such inhumane treatment that posed more costs of exploration than the benefits, if they did exist. The grueling work of slavery was very brutal and hurt many of our people.
