Frank Deford spent over forty years writing for Sports Illustrated, commentating sporting events regularly on NPR, and has written over eighteen books. On March 13 of 2013 Deford published, “School Bands Should Not Be Entertainment Adjunct for Sports,” on the NPR website. He addresses the middle aged, educated readers of National Public Radio. His motivation for the article comes from the response from the late president of the NCAA, Myles Brand. Deford was flabbergasted by Brand’s remark that students involved in musical extracurricular received genuine scholarships, not only athletes.
Bass Leadership Approaches Leadership styles vary between leaders. The Bass leadership continuum of leadership styles goes from laissez-fair to transformational, with the transactional style falling between the two. The
Final Draft We all have stories and memories tied to songs that have become a part of who are. Remember the violins playing in the background while watching a sad movie or the song that helped you through difficult times or the song you and your friends sang while attending a concert? Whether it’s on the television, the radio, in a movie, in the car, or at a sporting event, music is everywhere. Feeling the rhythm of music brings us so much joy and excitement but playing musical instrument is even more fulfilling because it has many benefits.
Any good program needs a strong leadership team, and I have always wanted to be a strong leader because I love helping others be their very best. In our marching band program our section leaders are called FOG (For Others Greatness), they are chosen not only for their musicality but also for their ability to work with and guide others. The section leaders during my freshman year were incredible and I longed to be just like them when I was finally able to apply and audition for the position. I am on the color guard and do not play an instrument during the marching season, therefore my color guard skills would need to be at an elevated level in comparison to those of my peers. As the audition portion of the application came about I worked diligently
Marching band should be considered a sport. Not only does marching band show physical exertion, but participants must also have the mental capability to participate in the sport. Since marching band falls into the definition of sport, the difficulty is equal to any other sport, and is as physical as it is mental, marching band should be considered a sport. Many people state that marching band isn’t a sport. However the dictionary definition of a sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”.
Did you know that marching band members spend so much time putting drill on the field for an entire summer break? The Friday nights, and Saturday afternoons we spend on a football field? The energy, sweat, and pride we put onto a football field or parking lot? All this, but unfortunately, marching band is still known for an “elective”.
Do you prefer to listen to music? Many of people do. The musicians sell their music and receive large sums of money. However, recently, there has been a large increase in popularity for music streaming services. To keep making money musicians have been required except endorsement deals from large corporations.
To the average person, the high school marching band is nothing more than a bunch of geeks that play during half time at the football games or monopolize the benches by the band hall, but to me, it is so much more. To me it is a family, a safe haven, a creative outlet, a home. I have been involved in marching band for three years, going on four, and I wouldn 't trade the experience for anything. When I entered high school as a scared and awkward freshman, I immediately had three hundred people that I could rely on. The program quickly became like a second home to me and opened up a whole new path in my life.
Is marching band rigorous and athletic enough to be considered a sport? From the very start of marching band, it has been considered an activity, or a hobby, and not a sport. Most people assume it isn’t athletic because it’s just an activity or a type of hobby that you do, and they don’t consider it athletic because they think you don’t need to put that much effort into it. The people who assume there isn’t much effort put into it also believe that marching band is really easy.
I was only a few days in when I stepped back and noticed something, all the leaders were missing out on other opportunities. They were consumed with responsibilities and so narrow minded towards band that most of them were missing the fun times outside of their narrow vision. When they were given new opportunities outside of band they mostly ignored them because they only had one thing on their mind. It made me realize that all the duties I’ve done for band had given me more opportunities to be a new different leader around the school. By not being a leader in the band I was allowed to see them.
As a fifth grader, I had little to no idea of the context a trumpet plays in. Only now do I appreciate the versatility in style that this brass beauty lends itself to. The trumpet is as well-rounded as an instrument gets, integral to many different genres. I play in wind ensemble, symphony orchestra, jazz ensemble, pit orchestra, marching band, brass quintets, solos, and more—but not without major adjustments to my playing technique. I have the privilege to lead an amalgam of sections, filled with distinctive individuals; it is only through this variety that I was able to identify a singular leadership style—what works and what doesn’t—across all groups.
As leaders, we set the standard, it is our job to lead the way, so let’s lead from the front in all we
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
It is a very dominant type of leadership. Distributed leadership’s attraction in education lies in its potential to bring about school improvement (Harris, 2007). Leadership activities in the ASF development are designed to promote change in the school. Distributed leadership requires multiple levels of involvement in decision making. It extends to students and encourages student voice” (Harris 2007).
Individual Reflective Paper Introduction Leadership, a controversial concept, has been studied for centuries. Scholars who study leadership have argued with the insight of leadership for many decades and finally promote a wide range of understandings of it.
