Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg on May 6, 1856 (Gay,1989). Freud is considered as one of the greatest thinkers of all-time. He is famous on his ideas of dreams, childhood sexualities, use of cocaine, and the role of the unconsciousness. Freud believed he discovered mysteries of the mind, which he called psychoanalysis. Freud believed that psychoanalysis was a new science; however, many medical expects opposed the idea of psychoanalysis as a science.
The Freudian revolution began in Vienna. Freud’s followers came from all around the world to be a part of the new movement. Many people wanted to take part in Freud’s new radical treatment called psychoanalysis. Freud thought of himself as a scientist, and he revolutionized the way we think of ourselves. Freud’s ideas a pealed to the imagination of his followers, because it was a new concept and in fit into the general thinking of the time. Freud believed dreams provided deep understanding of the mind. Freud stated that “the content of a dream was a fulfillment of a wish”. Freud experimented with cocaine he used it himself for at least ten years. Freud wrote his wife Martha about the use cocaine, “I have been reading about the effective ingredient of coca leaves”. Sigmund Freud wrote, “which some Indians tribes chew in order to make themselves resistant to privation and fatigue”. He also wrote that “a small amount dose lifted me to the heights in a wonderful fashion”(Markel,2011,pp.314). He was excited about the therapeutic properties that cocaine possessed, and he also recommended the use of cocaine for minor surgeries. Freud prescribed cocaine to his patients to relieve their depression and anxiety. Freud’s clients stated that they felt numbness in their mouth after chewing the drug, which led him to believe that it could be use as anesthetic
