This essay will offer a personal insight into the contributions of three important psychologists. Furthermore, it will discuss their contributions in light of their importance to the field. Primarily, I would like to discuss the contributions of Dr Alex Straiker, and then continue to the founder of modern philosophy, Descartes, concluding with Sigmund Freud. As mentioned in an earlier lecture, a student using their phone during a talk can be distracting in more than one regard and often lead to other students picking up on the idea that using their phone would be a good idea. Straiker’s research can be linked as similar to this idea in that his research is important as it’s the only type of its kind in the field of psychology and will provoke other researchers to carry on in his footsteps and further the field’s knowledge of cannabinoids, their effects and uses. I would argue this as important due to the wide array of medicinal functions which cannabinoids hold, for example; an active cannabinoid in Cannabis is cannabidiol, which can relieve pain and lower inflammation. Cannabinoids are also useful in treating the side effects of cancer and also facilitate effective cancer treatment. Cannabinoids also holds properties which include, antiviral activity and relieving muscle spasms caused by multiple sclerosis. Effectively, our subconscious, in conjunction with previous experiences and memory, changes what we choose to think about on an every day basis. Descartes argued that ‘Cogito Ergo Sum’ could prove the existence of a God using a variety of different arguments, in relation to proving his own existence; he did this seeking the source of his own consciousness; concluding a God could have been the only plausible creator.
