The endocannabinoid system was named after the Cannabis sativa plant. It is the central regulatory system which affects a wide range of biological processes. The endocannabinoid system consists of both the cannabinoids and the cannabinoids receptors that they bind to. The cannabinoids are the natural chemicals that are produced by the body that interacts with the endocannabinoid system. These molecules are found throughout the body, namely in areas such as the brain, the organs, immune cells, glands and connective tissues. In each tissue, the endocannabinoid system performs different tasks but the overall aim is the same. This is that of homeostasis (TruthOnPot.com, 2013). Homeostasis is the control of a stable internal environment. Furthermore, the cannabinoids not only regulate our internal and cellular homeostasis but it is also influences an individual relationship with their external environment.
