In the book Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the people of London in this future dystopian society take a pill called a soma that calms your nerves and helps your mind deal with stressful situations. Anytime they get worried at all or just feel down they take soma. (Huxley, 1998) Society should be against mood enhancing drugs because it alters their state of mind and effects the natural way of dealing with emotional situations. There are drugs that people take to alter their mood; some in a good way others may be bad. Some people are prescribed mood enhancing medication. One of these are called Xanax or (alprazolam). This drug is in the class benzodiazepine. It is used to treat anxiety disorders and panic disorders. Many side effects can occur upon taking this drug. It may be legal but that does not mean it is deemed safe or for everyone. Although it sounds great there are many problems with it. Some of the extreme side effects may include; memory problems, uncontrolled muscle movements, seizures, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts and many more. This drug is …show more content…

The drug being explained now may not be so easy to come by considering it is illegal in many states and federally illegal. It’s a plant that, after dried, is usually smoked but can be consumed in different ways. It contains the chemical delta-9- tetrahydrocannabinol that alters your mind. This drug effects your mind by making you think positive and forgetting things that may bother you. It has many side effects such as; hallucinations, altered senses, changes in mood, impaired body movement, memory loss, and difficulty with thinking and problem solving. When taken as a teenager it may effect normal brain development reducing thinking, memory, and learning functions and effect how the brain builds connections to complete these functions.
