Randle McMurphy vs. Alex Novels of similar genres usually share very similar characteristics. The main characters in the novels are often very similar as well. But, it is the differences that make each novel special and worth the read. In my novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, the main character Randle McMurphy shares many similar characteristics with the main character in the novel A Clockwork Orange, Alex. While they share many similarities, the differences are what make the novels both such exciting and dynamic reads.

The main characters in each novel are subjected to this attempt of change. The changes that are attempted on both characters are in attempt to change the characters into social machines that are capable of functioning in society in a way that is considered acceptable. The difference between the two is that in A Clockwork Orange is that the change was successful as opposed to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, which despite many efforts, the main character, Randle McMurphy, never conformed either by force or by choice. While Randle McMurphy shows some form of conformity in the novel, like when he decides to stop pushing the boundaries to avoid being kept in the ward longer, he never truly changes into the social machine that they wanted him to become. Alex, in A Clockwork Orange, was forcefully changed and ended up converting to the societal norm that was
