We just looked at how the US is turning it more socialist, and now we are going to look at how Russia turned communist, and how the same thing could happen to the US. To oversimplify Russia’s revolution, it was caused by a people who were rightly angered by the mistreatment of minorities, and wanted to make people equal. To draw a parallel, this anger of mistreatment of minorities is something that is becoming more common in the US, especially in the Democratic Party; if you look on their party platform page, you will see an entire section dedicated to their policies on protecting the rights of women, LGBTQ, etc, and trying to make everyone equal. The parallels between the Russian political landscape right before the revolution and the current US political situation are obviously imperfect, but they are present. If a strict Tsar system can suddenly turn into communism, what can happen to the US? How did communism gain power-did the people directly agree to communism? Mikhail Bulgakov mentions in Heart of a Dog the power of “sausages” or benefits. In the novel, the professor lures the wild dog to come back to his house with him by giving him a sausage. After he returns to the professor’s house, he receives a collar and is no longer a free dog. In a similar fashion, the Marxists lured the public in with claims such as equality and free housing. Some of the individuals got a shock when, after they came to power, the government knocked on their door and relocated them to a new apartment because they had been living too well- it was someone else’s turn to have a nice apartment. That was the side of Marxism that the public was not expecting, as Bulgakov hinted to with the Heart of a Dog. People did not think that the socialism would lead to communism, they were more interested in the benefits they were
