Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird and Edgar Guest’s poem, “Courage,” each represent courage differently through the way they decided to make their point. Using the theme of being courageous even when life is at it’s lowest and through comical tone in the novel and a serious tone in the poem, the parallel concept is depicted.
A first claim using the theme of having courage when failure seems possible. In the poem it states that “It’s part of his hours, his days and his years, Back of his smiles and behind his tears.” (Guest 29-30). However, the tone in the poem “Courage” by Edgar Albert Guest is more serious. In the poem it quotes “For who would strive for a distant goal must always have courage within his soul” (Guest 15-16). This is representing a serious tone because throughout the poem the author writes about what he believes is true courage and what it takes to be courageous. He makes this point come across with a deliberate diction. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird it states ‘“The world’s endin’, Atticus! … “no its not,” he said “it’s snowing”’ (Lee 86). This quote is comically describing Scouts first time experiencing snow, she believes the world is doomed, when in reality it is not! We know for a fact that if it snows, the world will not end, however to scout this only occurs when the world is on it’s last leg. In the poem it focuses mainly on what true courage is, the author represents this in a serious tone. He proves that a courage.
