Remembering The Poppies
Bob Dylan once said “I'll remember you. When I've forgotten all the rest. You to me were true. You to me were the best." This relates to the novel and the poem by saying once everything is over, the people that died will be remembered because both are in a state of destruction and can’t focus on everybody that died, but instead, they have to fight for them. It shows how both “In Flanders Fields" and The Hunger Games will show how they use remembrance with flowers to show that they are still there with the characters. John McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” and Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games both show remembrance in their stories during a time of despair, death, and grief. The poppies grow out of the ground next to the crosses signifying that the poppies grow where the soldiers were buried; and that the poppies are signifying that the soldiers are still with them just not in a human form. It also shows that in both death and destruction, the soldiers lost their lives but that doesn't mean that they can’t live on in the afterlife. In addition, The Hunger Games shows remembrance when Katniss decorated Rue’s body with flowers after she died. Collins says, “I decorate her body. Covering the ugly wound. Wreathing her face. Weaving her hair with bright colors” (371). This quote talks about how Katniss makes Rue’s body look good after she died so that when they pan the camera onto Rue’s body. Every district will remember what the capital did to her and how she died because they threw her into The Hunger Games to die and that it all could have been avoided if they never pulled her name. Katniss uses this to keep fighting as well along with Thresh and since Thresh was pushed to fight after Rue’s death, he ended up saving Katniss from the girl who is in District 2 all because Katniss was helping Rue so Katniss got to live
