Nearly one hundred years ago, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was formed in order to encourage and protect freedom of speech and other constitutional rights, especially to groups that are often seen as controversial and thus less deserving of those rights. Its position remains largely the same today. The major issues the ACLU champions in the current day are full rights for LGBT Americans, abortion rights, freedom from government surveillance, and combating mass incarceration. The ACLU lobbies, but mostly uses legal means to affect the government. The ACLU provides legal counsel in civil liberties cases, files civil liberties suits, and participates often in amicus curiae briefs.

Perhaps the most obvious rights Americans enjoy are acquired from the freedoms of speech, religion, assembly, and press guaranteed in the First Amendment. It is this amendment that gives America its environment of freedom, because if expression were restrained, oppression of the people would soon imitate. As George Washington said, "If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter. " When the people can 't voice their perspectives, tyranny begins. Civil liberties are reason for us being so free in American. It protects us from the government getting to powerful over our amendments that are in the constitution. Our federalism government must be following our civil liberties, or they can get in trouble for violating them. That is why they were put into the Constitution the bill of rights to protect our freedom and to prevent the government from being too powerful over the people which is not allowed in federalism since it has two main party’s that make up the political system. American citizens are entitled three inalienable rights: Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration of Independence states that these three rights are God given and humans are born with them. From the outside looking in, one can say America is an ideal place where a person can be whomever they want. Many people believe that Americans have the right to strive for greatness and are given ample opportunities to do so. America is all about protecting our rights as individuals and treating us fairly. They have expanded to protect all our rights and got better to improve our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Although Thomas Jefferson was against the Constitution and was considered an anti-federalist it has proven that the Constitution was the best fit for all Americans. The Bill of Rights has shown plenty of improvement due to the court cases that are currently being resolved. As an American citizen, I am aware of my rights. I am very thankful for my rights and I am genuinely grateful for the people who served to give me those rights. Through out American history the federal government has taken many actions which limited the freedom for many to all Americans. Examples would be the Espionage and Sedition acts, many people say that this was okay and it was a great thing that they placed these down during the time. Many others would argue that even in the time of war we as the people of the United States and as Americans should have the same rights we always would. Another example would be the relocation of Japanese Americans.
According to the Constitution, people can’t be stripped from their inalienable rights which are “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Despite the implement of the Constitution, “freedom” was defined differently in the 1980s than it was in the 20th century. Back in the 1980s, “freedom” was still not seen as a right to all people due to some of the laws such as the Immigration Reform and Control Act” that were implemented to go against the Constitution. While, in the 20th century, “freedom” was viewed as a right since “freedom” was offered to every people no matter what their race, their color of the skin, their religion, and their sexuality. For example, former president Barack Obama was able to make same-sex marriage legal, lifted the restriction on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” barred employers for firing their employees for being either transgender or having a different sexuality, allowed everyone to have universal access to ObamaCare, and had a diversified cabinet that helped Obama make tough decisions to make America the most affluent and strongest country in the world.
