The works of art I chose to compare and contrast are Memento Mori, "To This Favour", 1879 by William Michael Harnett, and Bull Skull, Fruit, Pitcher, 1939 by Pablo Picasso. The symbolism behind these two paintings are very similar. There are also some similarities in the composition of these two paintings, but there are many differences in the composition of these two paintings. The first symbolic similarity is that these paintings have a meaning of death.
It is apparent that the Venus of Urbino and the Nymph of the Spring consist of more differences than similarities. Having these two pieces being made so close in time to each other, would have one believing that the two pieces would have more in common. The painting done by Jim Dine called Dexter’s Four Robes and the painting by James Lechay called Sky, Sea and Samos are two paintings that are vastly different, but both exhibit similar and different Elements and Principles of Design. I will analysis both paintings and compare as well as contrast the similarities and differences of each painting. I will than explain my opinion on which painting I believed is more visually appealing and what I liked and disliked about each painting. Response Paper 1 Justin Chau For my research paper, I am going to two about two types of art throughout certain time periods in history. What I am going to compare and differentiate are types of art within the Prehistoric time period, and the Roman time period. Within time periods in general, there are artworks that are relevant throughout their existing time period, and picked up later in future generations, where people can learn about their past cultures and various types of art. For the first time period, the Prehistoric period, it includes the Paleolithic culture and its art. It is divided into three parts.
The two pieces of art I will discuss is Edouard Manet’s ‘Olympia’ and Mary Cassatt 's ‘Woman in Black at the Opera’. Manet’s Olympia was not critically accepted, the reaction to his painting was negative, only four critics out of sixty were favorably disposed to Olympia. Olympia was a derivative of Titian 's Venus. In 1863 the critics and the viewers didn’t know how to take Olympia, “they were unable to cope with so many novel factors and so they were unable to categorize the picture and so were unable to analyze it or understand it in any context” (Laurence, 2012). Nowadays we are more open minded and are able to see the painting in a different light.
In conclusion, they have some similarties but they have also different features becuase they don’t share exactly same environment. People,desire for something, geometry they are. I have realized that they are quite different but they wanted to live in better life. So, they put those desire into paintings, sculptures, buildings and it have made culutres. We should understand these context and approach because it is the easiest way to appreciate a work.

Leonardo Da Vinci 's The Last supper is a popular work of art that is Da Vinci 's rendition of the last supper as told in the bible. The Venus De Milo was discovered in 1820 on the island of Melos (Milos in modern Greek) in the southwestern Cyclades. It was sculpted by Alexandros of Antioch. There used to be an inscription on its plinth, however that has since been lost. Upon its discovery, it was given to King Louis XVIII who then donated it to the Louvre Museum, where it resides to this day. The statue was instantly famous, and adored by all.
