The book “The Road on Which We Came, by Steven J. Crum is a chronological report of the Shoshone peoples, and their history during the times from the Frontier to present-day. The main objective of Crum’s writings is the disposition of the Western Shoshone people. Unlike the majority of other Tribes, forgotten in history books as they assimilated into white society, the Western Shoshone have preserved their existence by cautiously dealing with settlers, defending their territory, and maintaining a large portion of their lands. From the initial mid-nineteenth century white contact, Crum describes the disruption of a way of life for the Newe, to the accepted need to adapt in the large modern society around them. The depiction of the Newe people as resilient and resourceful in the fight to preserve their culture and tradition, all while adapting to the forcefully changing environment around them (Crum, pp.
In chapter nine “Andre Trocme”, Gladwell describes the important of limit of powers through France’s powers to Le Chambon. France was undercontrolled by Germans at that time. They collaborated to harsh and to send all the Jews to internment camp; however, there was a village Le Chambon didn’t want to obey and disagreed with what French did. All the people in Le Chambon helped to hide all the Jews to a safe place. They used their own strategies and experiences to help the Jews.
The portrait was painted on wood panel and in gothic like form. Nonetheless, this masterpiece is representation of time, the complexity of the painting and the
The amount of similarities at hand are easily outnumbered by the amount of differences present between the two pieces. Even with the two paintings being created within the span of a year apart, they each have different styles. Titian’s Venus of Urbino, created in
I chose these works of art because they had many similarities when I began to do my research. These two work of art should be compared because they have the same building structure and although they were
In general, the thick curved lines are used to carve the figures of putti, the head of the man and Medusa. However, thin straight lines are used for details on the carvings. Most of the shapes on the Garland Sarcophagus are round and curved, besides the tomb itself is a rectangular shape. As for colour of the marble sculpture, the artist did not use any form of colour, only the natural marble colour. The Garland Sarcophagus is a coffin, the maker uses depth to create a space where the body would be placed.
The Devil’s Highway is a creative non-fiction novel by Luis Alberto Urrea and published in April 1, 2004. This resentful Novel tells the true story of 26 men who in May 2001 attempted to cross the mexican border into the desert of southern Arizona, through the deadly region known as the Devil’s Highway, a desert so harsh and desolate that even the border patrol is afraid to travel through it. Only twelve of those men made it out. The outcome of this was 14 people died and the person to blame were the coyotes that lead them to their death. Mendez was fully responsible for the walker's demise on May 23.
Both have rebellious aspects that set the story for the work. The Road is another example of social criticism. The only difference with this piece in contrast to the others, is that instead of a corrupted theme, it focuses on an apocalyptic one. These three works are completely
Throughout this semester as a class we have gone over many different terminology, seen many artists from all different countries and time periods. We have also learned about different kinds of art and media that the Artist work with. Over the entire semester I have gained a greater appreciation and understanding for art. Taking all of the new information that I learned this semester I choose three pieces of artwork from the St. Louis Art Museum. Two are similar to each other and the other is very different.
“A la derecha,” (“Go to the right”), said an officer. The place where the officers sent them was isolated. The officers got out of their car and pulled out their rifles and pointed toward the people in the van. “Give us all the money,” they yelled, as they pointed their rifles at the group.
The two pieces of art I will discuss is Edouard Manet’s ‘Olympia’ and Mary Cassatt 's ‘Woman in Black at the Opera’. Manet’s Olympia was not critically accepted, the reaction to his painting was negative, only four critics out of sixty were favorably disposed to Olympia. Olympia was a derivative of Titian 's Venus. In 1863 the critics and the viewers didn’t know how to take Olympia, “they were unable to cope with so many novel factors and so they were unable to categorize the picture and so were unable to analyze it or understand it in any context” (Laurence, 2012). Nowadays we are more open minded and are able to see the painting in a different light.
She wears a very exquisite and extravagant ball gown, decorated with laces, bows and feathers. In her right hand is a pink colored rose. She is the center of the portrait, her face turned away from the painter. From outside the world of the painting, there is a ray of sunlight that comes shining down on her. The contrast of light and dark show space and depth, the foreground where Marie Antoinette stands is lighter and where the background is left with a gloomy and dark texture.
The 1808 painting The Valpincon Bather by Ingres, is said to be “controversial”(oil painting techniques). At first glance, one may only see the back of a nude woman. If one looked closer there is a lot of different types of elements of composition. From the curtains, to the tassels it all plays a role.
She wears green as a symbol of hope, “possibly hope for becoming a mother”. There is not much further research on the lady in the green dress. Why do their faces look so strange? - Although the painting remains in relatively good condition to this day, “small losses of original paint and damages” have been sustained, especially to the faces of the subjects. According to Infrared reflectography, which take a closer look at the layers of paint on a microscopic level, a multitude of alterations have been made specifically to both faces and the mirror, which may also be the source of their ghost-like
