Nathaniel Hawthorn and Edgar Allan Poe were two completely different men that wrote in the same time period. Their writings were the same type: gothic, dark Romance. They also have some differences. Poe wrote about death or love lost while Hawthorn wrote about Puritans, but they were writer’s in the Romantic Movement. Hawthorn and Poe are two completely opposite people, but their writings are very similar. Nathaniel Hawthorn is an American novelist and short story writer. He first published novels. One of his first novels he published was “Fanshawe” in 1828. Later he wrote short stories. He published in the New England area. His inspiration for his short stories and novels, were the Puritan. They both were part of dark romanticism. Dark Romanticism is a kind of literary subgenera that influenced by transcendental but they do not embrace the concept of transcendental (American bibliographical centre and EBSCO publish firm 2003). Nathaniel wrote his novels about the sin or evil of humanity. While Poe wrote his stories about death or lost of a love one. Another thing is both of their writings were things that affect human life. Nathaniel’s novels were about the evil and sin of humanity and he also provide’s moral lessons to the society. Poe focus on death and a lost of a love one and it's physical signs and impact of decomposition. They both educate people on the effects of sin or evil spirits and premature burial and mourning of lost ones. They also both have Psychological themes in their stories. Nathaniel uses psychological themes and he also uses symbolism to convey the meaning to the readers. Poe’s main theme is fiction.
